What do mangos, lentils and seaweed have in common? They are all being touted as top snack foods in 2012! We recently attended the Sweets and Snacks Expo in Chicago and these uniquely flavored snacks were the talk of the town. Although these might be considered to “out there” for your everyday snacking pleasure right now, it won’t be long before you start seeing them pop up at your local grocery store – I promise! The real question is…how do you make your kid or even your resistant father try new, less well known snacks? A successful PR campaign can make any food appeal to any audience. For instance, drawing on nutritional facts for the health nuts or playing up the cartoon character for the kids, it’s all about the messaging and positioning!
These types of out of the box snacks are a PR person’s dream. Why, you ask? While all PR and Social Media campaigns can be both fun and challenging, taking a product that is unfamiliar to most audiences and making it mainstream is an awesome responsibility. Successfully breaking into the well-established snack food industry can appear daunting but that is when we step in and imbibe the campaign with fun and interactive ideas that will make the company stand out from the noise. Have you, or are you, about to launch a snack/food product that consumers would not consider mainstream? We would love to hear how you overcame these challenges.
